Chin projection and the jaw relationship · facial bone contouring · facial aesthetic surgery
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
His assessment of a chin begins with the bite and the position of the whole lower jaw, because that is what decides whether a chin operation is even the right question. Where the finding is orthodontic he says so and refers, and where it is proportional he is as likely to recommend treating the nose, or nothing, as to recommend the chin. When the chin bone itself is the answer, his preference is to change the bone rather than to cover it, and to plan the change against the profile and the lips rather than against an ideal number.
Clinical focus
The bite decides the plan, not the photograph
Most people arrive having already decided which treatment they want. In a lower face the useful question is whether the problem is the bone, the bite or the proportions around it — and a practice that treats all three with the same treatment is not assessing.
